Learner Testimonial — Business Analyst
Sometimes, people enter the world of tech by being open to opportunities at the right time. Michael Ashford says he “fell into tech by accident.”
“I’ve worked in insurance for 15 years — Household & Commercial claims. It wasn’t tech-based at all, more customer service. People would file for damaged property, and we managed the claim on their behalf.
“With insurance claims, you always have to think on your feet. Listen to the customer and process what they’re saying, understand the situation — because, if you underestimate it, more damage occurs.
“I enjoyed my role, but I didn’t know what to go next. Then an opportunity arose to become Claims Analyst. People always sought my advice, so I went for it!
“I spent a year as Claims Analyst and then moved into the Business Architecture team as a Business Analyst.”
Interestingly, due to the needs of his employer, this opportunity was an Apprenticeship – a Level 4 Business Analyst programme.
Due to issues with a previous Apprenticeship provider, his company looked at Firebrand. They liked the Firebrand programme structure and went with it.
Mike was the first Business Analyst apprentice to join the Firebrand programme. He took British Computer Society (BCS) courses in Businesses Analysis Practice, Business Modelling, and Requirements Engineering.
“It was quite challenging to work and study at the same time, but my work gave me time to dedicate to my studies. I have 2 kids, but I wanted to commit to it fully because I wanted to make sure I was qualified to do this role!”
For all coursework, Mike went to the Firebrand training centre in Wyboston Lakes, Bedfordshire.
“My favourite part was meeting other Business Analyst apprentices at Wybo and comparing my role and my work to people from other companies.”
As the Apprenticeship progressed, Mike realized he was following the right processes in his work and felt a lot more confident. He also wanted to move forward.
“I have a natural urge to better myself and push myself forward. I started out as a baker and have 3 diplomas now. While working in claims, I did a diploma in Customer Service, then one in Insurance, then the Apprenticeship.”
However, another position opened up before Mike finished the App – Senior Business Analyst. He wasn’t looking to change companies, but the opportunity was too good to pass up. In his new role, he uses software to help estimate the claims, works with Data Engineers, and uses Scrum Project Management skills to ensure all documentation is clear.
At the moment, Mike is happy where he is. He keeps his eyes open for future study opportunities and would definitely recommend Apprenticeships.
“Apps are a no-brainer! An Apprenticeship will give you that confidence, even if you’ve done the role for a few years. You may not use every part of the course at that time, but you might use it later. You receive a recognised, industry-standard diploma and you can work anywhere in the world.”
Thank you for your feedback, Mike!
