Interesting read — DCMS Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2022
The UK Government Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) published its latest Cyber Security Breaches Survey last summer.
Some of the key findings are:
1. The scale of Cyber attacks
Over the past 12 months, 39% of UK businesses identified a cyber attack, roughly the same proportion as the previous year. However, enhanced cyber security may have led to a higher identification of attacks, suggesting that less cyber mature organisations in this space may be underreporting.
2. Types of Cyber attacks
The most common were phishing (83%), with more sophisticated types of attacks such as denial of service, malware, or ransomware attacks following suit (21%).
3. The frequency of Cyber attacks
31% of businesses and 26% of charities estimate they were attacked at least once a week, with one in five businesses and charities citing a negative outcome as a direct consequence.
4. The cost of Cyber attacks
The average estimated cost of all Cyber attacks in the last 12 months is between £4,200 and £19,400 per business. Analysts believe the lack of framework for financial impacts of Cyber attacks may lead to underreporting.
5. Management views on Cyber crime
82% of Senior Management boards within UK businesses rate Cyber Security as a ‘very high’ or ‘fairly high’ priority. Additionally, 50% of businesses say they update the board on Cyber Security matters at least quarterly.
6. The need for Cyber hygiene
Just 49% of businesses have followed at least five of the 10 steps outlined in the 10 Steps to Cyber Security guidelines issued by the National Cyber Security Centre; in the case of charities, just 39%.
