Lean Six Sigma certifications

Originally developed by Motorola in 1986, Six Sigma is a business process management strategy that seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of defects and reducing process variability.

The strategy utilises a set of quality management, process improvement, and problem-solving methods, including statistical methods, and creates an infrastructure of people within the organisation (Black Belts and Green Belts) who are experts in these methods. Each Six Sigma project follows a defined sequence of steps and has quantified financial targets, such as reducing cost or increasing profit.

Lean Six Sigma vs PMI PMP®

Both Lean Six Sigma and PMI Project Management Professional (PMP®) are based on well-defined methodologies and emphasize improving processes. 

While Lean Six Sigma combines Lean principles (reducing waste) with Six Sigma (reducing variation), PMP is based on the PMBOK® Guide, which outlines a comprehensive framework for Project Management.

Lean Six Sigma projects tend to be focused on specific process improvements and can be small in scope but deep in analysis; in contrast, PMP involves managing entire projects, which can range from small initiatives to large, complex projects, covering all aspects of project management including scope, schedule, cost, quality, resources, communication, risk, and procurement.

Finally, Lean Six Sigma aims at continuous process improvement with a strong focus on quality and efficiency, while PMP aims at successfully completing projects within defined constraints (time, cost, scope), delivering project outputs that meet stakeholders' needs and expectations.

Should you attempt to achieve Lean Six Sigma if you already have the PMP?

If you already are a PMP, Lean Six Sigma will complement your skills by providing you with specialized tools for process improvement, quality management, and operational efficiency. Having both certifications can open up more advanced roles, such as Operations Manager, Quality Manager, or Continuous Improvement Manager, and can enable you to command higher salaries.

Also, it's important to bear in mind that certain industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and finance value Six Sigma over PMP. If you're working in or want to enter one of these fields, having Six Sigma certification can give you an edge by aligning your skills with industry standards.
