2024 Cybersecurity Trends

Interesting read — Cyber Security trends in 2024 according to IBM

We came across an excellent article about this year’s Cyber Security trends.

According to IBM, 2024 could see Cyber Security attacks at a whole new level.

2024 started amidst ongoing tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine – sadly, far from being resolved – in early June 2024, there will be Elections for the EU Parliament; in July, the 33rd Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris, and, in early November, the Presidential Election will take place in the United States.

According to Charles Henderson, Global Head, IBM X-Force, this “perfect storm of events” will cause disinformation campaigns “on a whole new level.”

“Cyber criminals have everything they need to deceive unsuspecting users, consumers and even public officials through AI-engineered deception tactics. We’re about to see improved deep fakes, audio fakes and very convincing AI-crafted phishing emails in cyber criminals’ efforts to deceive the public and advance their malicious objectives.”

What’s more, IBM predicts that Generative AI will help cybercriminals process their massive amounts of stolen data and create profiles for potential targets: “GenAI’s ability to optimize target selection is no different from how it’s improving the customer acquisition process in marketing — it’s just a different light of legality.”

Could this lead to the “AI version of Morris Worm?” John Dwyer, Head of Research at IBM X-Force thinks that “in the relatively near term, we’ll see [an] event where AI is confirmed being used to scale a malicious campaign” similar to the 1988 Morris worm, the first cyberattack ever reported.

“While we’re still far out from the day when AI-engineered cyberattacks become the norm, these things don’t happen overnight — but the “‘premiere’ is likely around the corner.”
