Overview

The primary role of a DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship is to make the practices and process of developing, testing, and deploying working software faster, more efficient, and more reliable through automation and harmonisation of systems and tools.

Key to their success as DevOps Engineers is a good understanding of software development practices, having the required programming/scripting skills, and understanding operations at the deployment end — on-premises or on cloud infrastructure.

Learners on this programme will gain a deeper understanding of the software development lifecycle, methodologies, Agile software development practices, and fundamental DevOps concepts, values, practices, and techniques.

The programme takes a cloud-infrastructure-focused perspective and incorporates infrastructure knowledge in the design and implementation of DevOps practices, cloud security aspects, source control, and CI/CD implementation.

Scripting is a key skill a DevOps Engineer should possess. The Python programming language course included in this programme will equip the learner with the skills required for automation and configuration efforts in DevOps environments, eliminating manual tasks.

In addition to valuable knowledge and skills, apprentices will develop an aptitude for working in a collaborative environment, recognise that technology evolves at a rapid pace, and embrace continuous learning through experimentation, peer reviews, and feedback.

Firebrand’s programme is taught through a blended framework of Residential and Online Classroom learning based on our Lecture, Lab, Review methodology.

Your apprentice will receive support from our SMEs as well as full access to an e-learning platform that covers all areas of Cyber Security and over 5,000 courses on other relevant business topics.

Before attending this accelerated apprenticeship, you should have:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs or A-Levels, a Level 3 qualification (apprenticeship or BTEC in a relatable subject), or relevant experience and/or an aptitude test

STEM subjects would also be beneficial to your application.

You should not have an existing qualification at the same level or higher that this apprenticeship in a similar subject.

Curriculum

On this accelerated programme, you'll learn the following knowledge and skills:

  • The software development lifecycle, the various methodologies and the roles and responsibilities within the software development stages. This will equip learners to work across the various stages of the SDLC;
  • Foundational programming skills in Python, including TDD concepts and use of unit testing frameworks;
  • Core knowledge and understanding of fundamental DevOps values, practices, and techniques in framework-agnostic learning;
  • Design and implementation of DevOps processes and practices through a combination of people, process, and technology in order to deliver products and services that meet business and end-user needs;
  • Key cloud security issues, best practices, and technical knowledge and skills required to manage information security in the cloud

End Point Assessment

All Apprenticeships end with the End Point Assessment (EPA). This is completed by a third party, the End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO).

The EPA evaluates all the work completed through the duration of the Apprenticeship.

For the Level 4 DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship, the EPA consists of:

  • a Project with Practical Assessment
  • a Professional Discussion

The apprentice will only enter the EPA Gateway once the employer is content that the apprentice is working at or above the occupational standard. In making this decision, the in-work mentor may take advice from Firebrand, but the decision must ultimately be made by them.

EPAO determines when all other Gateway requirements have been met, and the EPA period will only commence once the EPAO has confirmed this.

The EPA assessment period in Gateway can be anything from 4 weeks to 6 months.

For more information, check out our EPA Fact Sheet.

Exams

Upon successful completion of the programme, you'll have the opportunity to gain the following qualifications:
