Domain 1 - The Process of Auditing Information Systems (21%)

Provide audit services in accordance with IS audit standards to assist the organisation in protecting and controlling information systems.

Domain 1 - Task Statements:

  • 1.1 Execute a risk-based IS audit strategy in compliance with IS audit standards to ensure that key risk areas are audited. 
  • 1.2 Plan specific audits to determine whether information systems are protected, controlled and provide value to the organisation. 
  • 1.3 Conduct audits in accordance with IS audit standards to achieve planned audit objectives. 
  • 1.4 Communicate audit results and make recommendations to key stakeholders through meetings and audit reports to promote change when necessary.

Course and Exam Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for attending the CISA course and sitting the exam.

Achieving the CISA Certification

In order to become CISA certified, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Successfully complete the CISA exam
  2. Submit an Application for CISA Certification - see below
  3. Adhere to the Code of Professional Ethics
  4. Adherence to the Continuing Professional Education Program
  5. Comply with the Information Systems Auditing Standards

Submitting an Application for CISA Certification

The CISA certification is designed to recognise information systems (IS) audit, control and security professionals. You must be able to submit evidence of a minimum of five years of professional information systems auditing, control or security work experience.

Experience substitutions

The following can be substituted for a maximum of three of the five-year work experience requirement:

  • A maximum of 1 year of information systems experience OR 1 year of non-IS auditing experience can be substituted for 1 year of experience.
  • 60 to 120 completed university semester credit hours (the equivalent of an 2-year or 4-year degree) not limited by the 10-year preceding restriction, can be substituted for 1 or 2 years of experience, respectively. A bachelor's or master's degree from a university that enforces the ISACA-sponsored Model Curricula can be substituted for 1 year of experience. This option cannot be used if 3 years of experience substitution and educational waiver have already been claimed.
  • A master's degree in information security or information technology from an accredited university can be substituted for 1 year of experience.

Experience Exception

If you are a full-time university instructor in a related field (e.g., computer science, accounting, information systems auditing), you can substitute 2 years of experience in this role for 1 year of the experience requirement.
