Pwc CEO Survey

PwC study — UK CEOs fastest to adopt Gen AI

PwC have released their insightful 27th Annual Global CEO Survey describing UK CEOs as “bullish” about global economy and adopting GenAI at a much faster rate than their worldwide peers.

According to the study, which was announced at the 2024 World Economic Forum in Davos, 42% of UK CEOs stated they have implemented Gen AI technology in the last year compared with 32% of CEOs globally. UK CEOs also report feeling more confident about the market than they had the year before.

This puts the UK slightly ahead of the US (38%) and “at the front of the pack” compared to France (20%), and Germany (surprisingly, just 9%).

Furthermore, Gen AI adoption in the UK is expected to create rather than diminish jobs, with “48% of UK CEOs saying they will increase headcount by 5% or more in 2024, more than double the proportion that say they’ll reduce it (21%).” Whilst, on the one hand, Gen AI is expected to increase efficiency, it will also increase Cyber Security risks, prompting the need for certified Cyber Security specialists.

The survey interviewed 4,702 CEOs in 105 countries. The only countries that have adopted Gen AI faster than the UK are Norway (53%), Japan (50%), and Finland (49%).

“The UK’s service-based economy makes it ideally placed for the GenAI revolution—building tech is only half the battle, ensuring people and businesses can use it is key…By investing in AI, the UK has a better chance of closing the productivity gap with other major economies,” said PwC UK Senior Partner, Kevin Ellis.
