Head of Infrastructure - Sean Morris

Company: Dot Net Solutions
Job Title: Head of Infrastructure
Bio: Over eighteen years of experience in IT - specialising in the engagement of business customers to help refine complex business requirements to allow the design of IT solutions and services.

I have a strong background in Infrastructure Solution Architecture and design with the last five years spent on working for Outsourced IT providers in both a pre-sales and solution architect capacity.

What career path did you take to bring you to your current job title?

I have always been up for a challenge and enjoy working on things that might normally be above my pay grade. Like many IT professionals born into the industry in the early 90's there has always been scope for new and exciting challenges. I have always been looking out for that next thing that helps me add value.

What does an average working day look like?

Lots of spinning plates. I sit across delivery, pre sales and product portfolio so any given day I will have a number of moving parts across these three very large areas of the business.

What advice would you give someone getting into the industry?

In this industry it is all about skills and attitude. You need to get known as the go to person inside an organisation who is always ready and willing to help. An apprenticeship is a really good way to get involved as you will learn real world skills in a live environment as well as getting the training you need to hone your hard skills.

The pace of change in this industry is such that an apprentice is probably better suited to get a tasty job after 3 years than a graduate.

How can we inspire more young people and women into the industry to fill the ever widening skills gap?

I think the IT industry provides a very dynamic work environment. No two days are the same and you have the challenge of keeping up with advances in technology so you are kept on your toes.

Sometimes you can find yourself on the cutting edge of a major shift in the industry and can increase your value significantly. Also as IT is now fundamental to our daily lives many young people are well placed to make the shift from consumer to innovator.
