FAQs
What is Scrum?
Scrum is an Agile framework developed to facilitate the completion of complex projects. It was originally created specifically for software development projects but has since been applied to a wide range of workloads.
A brief breakdown of the Scrum framework:
- A product leader creates a prioritised list known as the product backlog.
- The product team select a chunk from the product backlog and decide how to implement that piece in a certain amount of working time, known as a sprint (usually two to four weeks).
- During this sprint, the team have a daily Scrum to assess their progress. This is led by the Scrum master who aims to keep them on track.
- Once the sprint is complete, there should be a shippable product.
- Before the next sprint commences, there is a sprint review and retrospective look back.
What is a Scrum Master?
Think of the scrum master as a coach for a product development team. The scrum master is responsible for ensuring the team follows the principles and practices of Scrum. They are often thought of as the process owner in the team, ensuring the team remains on track whilst also maintaining the balance with the project's key stakeholders.
What are the main responsibilities of a Scrum Master?
- Ensure the team agree on what can be achieved during a sprint.
- Ensure the team reach a consensus on activities in the daily scrum.
- Help the team stay focused while following rules agreed in the daily scrum.
- Work to remove obstacles that are preventing the team from progressing.
- Protect the team from being distracted
How does a Scrum Master compare to a PMI PMP®?
Becoming a Scrum Master and earning the Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification developed by PMI, the Project Management Institute, cater to different methodologies, roles, and career goals.
Scrum Master certifications focus on Agile Project Management, while PMP® focuses on traditional (waterfall) and hybrid project management methodologies. A Scrum Master’s role is more about team facilitation and ensuring the team adheres to Agile practices rather than managing the project as a whole, while PMP®-certified professionals manage all aspects of a project, including scope, time, cost, quality, resources, communication, risk, and procurement.
In general, becoming a Scrum Master is ideal for those looking to specialize in Agile and Scrum, particularly in Software Development or other industries adopting Agile methodologies. It’s often a stepping stone to roles like Agile Coach or Product Owner. Meanwhile, PMI PMP® is suited for professionals looking to advance in general Project Management across various industries, including construction, healthcare, IT, and more. Achieving the PMP® certification can also open doors to higher-level management roles such as Program Manager, Portfolio Manager, or Project Director.
