International Women’s Day — Inspiring colleagues: Oluwaseun Adebayo

This International Women’s Day, Cybersecurity Instructor Oluwaseun Adebayo shares her take on her tech journey and commitment to mentorship.

Discovering my passion

While growing up, I discovered two things about myself. First, I loved teaching—breaking down complex topics and helping others understand them. Second, I had a natural inclination for investigation, always wanting to find the root cause of an issue and use that knowledge to propose effective solutions. These two passions unknowingly set the foundation for my journey into technology.

My entry into tech

After completing my university education, I started my career in tech as a Tier 2 Technical Support Engineer assisting Microsoft product end-users. This role sharpened my problem-solving skills, allowing me to understand technical challenges from both user and system perspectives. Two years into this role, I took up the challenge of becoming a certified trainer. Teaching technology became a way for me to bridge knowledge gaps, helping others build confidence in their technical abilities.

Transitioning into Cybersecurity

After two years as a certified trainer, I began my journey into Cybersecurity. Initially, I was drawn to the field’s complexity and the critical role it plays in protecting digital assets. As I delved deeper, I developed a strong interest in three key areas: offensive security, defensive security, and governance, risk, and compliance (GRC). Offensive security allowed me to think like an attacker, identifying vulnerabilities before they could be exploited. Defensive security sharpened my ability to protect systems from evolving threats, while GRC helped me understand the policies and frameworks that ensure compliance and risk management in organizations.

Embracing challenges and growth

The road has not been easy. Navigating different aspects of Cybersecurity, obtaining certifications, and keeping up with the ever-evolving landscape requires dedication and resilience. However, every challenge has been a stepping stone, shaping me into the professional I aspire to be. The obstacles I face today are the building blocks for the future I envision.

Encouraging more women in tech

Over the years, I have seen a shift in the tech industry, with more women stepping into roles that were once considered unconventional for them. Tech is an excellent career option for women—it offers endless learning opportunities, growth, and the ability to make a meaningful impact. For those feeling intimidated, my advice is simple: start where you are, embrace challenges, and seek mentorship. No one knows everything from the beginning; progress comes with time, effort, and continuous learning.

My commitment to mentorship

I understand the challenges that come with transitioning into tech, especially for women who may feel overwhelmed by the journey ahead. This is why I am open to mentoring interested females all over the world who may feel threatened by these challenges. Through guidance, shared experiences, and structured learning paths, I hope to help more women confidently step into the world of technology and thrive.

A future of possibilities

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I hope to inspire more women to explore technology. The journey may not always be smooth, but the rewards of growth, knowledge, and impact make it worthwhile. Tech needs more diverse voices, and if you're interested in it, take that first step—your contributions will shape the future.

Happy International Women’s Day!
