FAQs

CISA or CISSP—Which one should I take?

ISACA CISA and ISC2 CISSP are some of the best-known and most respected certifications in IT.

CISA is primarily focused on information systems auditing, control, and security; it emphasizes the management and governance of information systems and their security. On the other hand, CISSP covers a wide range of topics in information security, including technical aspects, governance, risk management, and compliance.

Secondly, CISA is aimed at professionals involved in auditing, controlling, and securing information systems, such as IT Auditors, Audit Managers, Security Consultants, and Compliance Officers. In contrast, CISSP is suitable for roles such as Security Analysts, Security Managers, IT Directors, and Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), attesting to their expertise in information security management and design.

Finally, in terms of prerequisites, both certifications require at least five years of professional experience in their areas of focus and offer the chance to substitute some requirements with professional qualifications. Ultimately, choosing between CISA and CISSP depends on your career goals, interests, and the specific areas of IT you want to focus on.

Prerequisites

Before attending this accelerated course, you should have a minimum 5 years' exposure in the field of Information Systems Auditing. It would also be ideal if you have had experience in the CISA Job Practice Areas.

Submitting an Application for CISA Certification

The CISA certification is designed to recognise information systems (IS) audit, control and security professionals. You must be able to submit evidence of a minimum of five years of professional information systems auditing, control or security work experience.

Experience substitutions

The following can be substituted for a maximum of three of the five-year work experience requirement:

  • A maximum of 1 year of information systems experience OR 1 year of non-IS auditing experience can be substituted for 1 year of experience.
  • 60 to 120 completed university semester credit hours (the equivalent of an 2-year or 4-year degree) not limited by the 10-year preceding restriction, can be substituted for 1 or 2 years of experience, respectively. A bachelor's or master's degree from a university that enforces the ISACA-sponsored Model Curricula can be substituted for 1 year of experience. This option cannot be used if 3 years of experience substitution and educational waiver have already been claimed.
  • A master's degree in information security or information technology from an accredited university can be substituted for 1 year of experience.

Experience Exception

If you are a full-time university instructor in a related field (e.g., computer science, accounting, information systems auditing), you can substitute 2 years of experience in this role for 1 year of the experience requirement.
