BCS Open Letter for AI — "Force for good, not threat to humanity"

The British Computer Society (BCS) have published an open letter calling for Artificial Intelligence to be recognised "as a force for good, not a threat to humanity."

Founded in the UK in 1957, BCS, also named The Chartered Institute for IT, promotes wider social and economic progress through the advancement of information technology science and practice.

Their letter calls for the UK Government and industry "to recognise AI as ‘a transformational force for good not an existential threat to humanity,’" asserting that, if AI creators share global professional and technical standards, AI can enhance "every area of life."

This letter comes amid significant controversy about the technology, with tech personalities such as Elon Musk calling for a pause on AI development.

Rashik Parmar MBE, CEO of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT said: “The technologists and leaders who signed our statement believe AI won’t grow up like The Terminator but instead as a trusted co-pilot in learning, work, healthcare, entertainment...The public need confidence that the experts not only know how to create and use AI but how to use it responsibly.”
