BBC News — Police bust global cyber gang accused of industrial-scale fraud
A global network of cyber criminals was arrested earlier today, reports the BBC.
The criminals used text messages to steal identity information, including 480,000 card numbers and 64,000 Pin codes, known in criminal slang as ‘fullz data,’ and generating over £1m in profits.
According to police, the scammers don’t have technical skills but used a website, LabHost, to message and misdirect victims “in an almost industrial fashion.”
“The technology allowed scammers without technical skills to bombard victims with messages designed to trick them into making payments online,” “buying [data] off the shelf,” said National Economic Crime Centre Director, Adrian Searle.
The data dump has since been secured and 37 people have been arrested.
This news comes as, only 2 months ago, the National Crime Agency took down LockBit, “the world's most harmful cyber-crime group,” and banks warn of a big increase in online scams.
